Getaway to Kuala Lumpur

Hey fellow travellers! I’m back with another story – this time about a spontaneous adventure that came together in record time. From idea to takeoff in less than two weeks, it was a quick turnaround… and exactly what we needed.

The purpose of the trip? To celebrate some big milestones for both my sister and me. After a challenging year, we decided it was time to indulge! We tossed around ideas – Hong Kong or Malaysia – but in the end, Kuala Lumpur won our hearts.

Although we’ve both been to KL many times before, mostly visiting family, it had been over 10 years since my last proper trip. We were craving the food and eager to see how the city had changed. And let me tell you – it didn’t disappoint!

Here’s a quick recap of our 5-day escape and all the little moments that made it so special.

Day 1: Touchdown and Late-Night Bites at Jalan Alor

After a 9-hour flight (and four movies), we landed in KL and headed straight to our hotel – The Ritz-Carlton, Kuala Lumpur. Nestled in Bukit Bintang, it was the perfect base: luxurious, central, and just steps away from shopping, food, and nightlife.

First stop? KL’s famous night food market, Jalan Alor – the bustling street was alive with satay stalls, seafood feasts and local fruits. We tucked into the chicken satay and char kway teow, washed down with fresh coconut water under the humid night sky.

Day 2: City Chic at The Exchange TRX

We kicked off the day with nasi lemak for breakfast at the hotel (a must!), then made our way to the city’s sleek new shopping and lifestyle destination: The Exchange TRX.

Our visit happened to coincide with the Mid-Autumn Festival, and the place was alive with colourful stalls selling mooncakes of every variety – from traditional lotus paste to more modern flavours like matcha and durian. We wandered through the displays like excited kids in a candy shop!

Day 3: Suria KLCC, Chinatown and Kwai Chai Hong

After a relaxed morning, we walked over to Suria KLCC and took in the dazzling sight of the Petronas Twin Towers. No matter how many times you’ve seen them, they’re always awe-inspiring. We snapped a few photos at KLCC Park, then headed to Chinatown for a completely different vibe.

One of the highlights of our trip was exploring Kwai Chai Hong, a once-forgotten alleyway in Chinatown that’s now been transformed into an open-air gallery of vibrant street art. The murals told stories of old Kuala Lumpur — full of nostalgia and heart. It reminded me a bit of the famous street art in Penang and was such a refreshing cultural detour.

Of course, we couldn’t leave Chinatown without enjoying another Nyonya meal. The rich blend of Chinese and Malay influences in every dish brought back so many memories from our childhood.

Day 4: Durian Delight and Birthday Celebration

Durian lovers, this one’s for you! We made our way to Durian BB Park, a dedicated durian haven offering a wide variety of the king of fruits. We went for the Black Thorn, one of the most sought-after types (even more premium than the famous Musang King). Creamy, pungent, and oh-so-satisfying — definitely an acquired taste, but we loved it!

That evening, we dressed up to celebrate my sister’s birthday with a special dinner at Li Yen, the Michelin-selected Cantonese restaurant within our hotel. The ambience was serene and refined, and every dish — from delicate double-boiled soup to their specialty Peking Duck — was beautifully crafted. It was the perfect way to mark such a special occasion.

Day 5: The Pavillion Kuala Lumpur and Flying Home

On our final day, we squeezed in a quick visit to Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, conveniently located across from the hotel. We had lunch at Nyonya Colors in the Food Hall — a charming spot that served traditional kuih and other local favourites in a setting that felt like stepping into an old Malaysian home.

All too soon, it was time to head to the airport. My sister and I went our separate ways — she flew back to Melbourne, while I treated myself to one final indulgence: a Business Class overnight flight with Malaysia Airlines, the perfect way to catch some much-needed rest after such a whirlwind trip. Before boarding, I took some time to unwind at the Golden Lounge Satellite at KLIA, savouring a few last local delicacies.

Final Thoughts

Kuala Lumpur is a city that’s constantly evolving, yet still deeply rooted in its heritage. For us, it was more than just a getaway – it was time to reconnect, reminisce, and revel in the things we love: family, food, and a touch of luxury.

We’re already talking about going back – maybe even next year.

Until next time… sweet travels!
