Located just a short train ride from Shanghai, Suzhou is one of China’s most picturesque historic cities. Famous for its classical gardens, ancient canals, and charming old streets, Suzhou has long been celebrated in Chinese poetry and art. Often referred to as the “Venice of the East,” the city offers a beautiful glimpse into traditional Jiangnan culture and architecture, making it a perfect destination for a relaxing day trip.
Getting There From Shanghai
The easiest way to reach Suzhou from Shanghai is by high-speed train. Trains run frequently throughout the day from Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station to Suzhou Railway Station and the journey takes around 25–35 minutes.
Tip: Make sure you pre-book your train tickets ahead of time, especially during weekends and peak travel seasons.
Shantang Street
Our first stop was Shantang Street, a charming historic street lined with traditional buildings, canals, and local shops. It felt wonderfully preserved and full of character. Stone bridges crossed over narrow waterways while wooden boats drifted slowly beneath them, giving the entire street a postcard-perfect feel. It’s the kind of place where you can easily spend an hour or two simply wandering, browsing the little shops, and soaking in the atmosphere.

Lingering Garden
Next, we visited the beautiful Lingering Garden, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of China’s most famous classical gardens. Every corner was thoughtfully designed — intricate rock formations, covered corridors, and delicate windows framing perfect scenes like living paintings. The garden felt incredibly peaceful and poetic, with quiet ponds, elegant pavilions, and centuries-old trees creating a sense of calm away from the busy streets.

Pingjiang Road
Before heading back to Shanghai, we wandered along Pingjiang Road, another atmospheric old street with canals, teahouses, and boutiques. Musicians played traditional instruments along the walkway while small cafés spilled out onto the narrow lanes. It was the perfect way to end our day in Suzhou.

Tip: We didn’t end up having enough time to enjoy dinner in Suzhou. If it’s your first time there, I’d recommend doing an overnight trip instead to give you enough time to explore the city.
Final Thoughts
Even though it was just a short day trip, Suzhou left a lasting impression. With its beautiful gardens, historic canals, and old streets full of character, it’s easy to see why the city has inspired artists and poets for centuries.
Stay tuned for my next post. Until then… sweet travels!
