During the school holidays, we spent four days exploring Port Douglas, the ancient Daintree Rainforest and Cairns — combining wildlife encounters, incredible scenery and so memorable experiences.

Here’s our complete Port Douglas and Daintree itinerary, including where we stayed, what we did and the highlights we loved most.

Why Visit Port Douglas?

Nestled between the Great Barrier Reef and the world’s oldest tropical rainforest, Port Douglas is one of Australia’s most spectacular holiday destinations.

What makes Port Douglas so special is its unique combination of nature, relaxation and adventure. It’s the perfect base for exploring Tropical North Queensland, offering beautiful beaches and easy access to some of Australia’s most iconic natural attractions.

Day 1: Arrive in Port Douglas

After arriving in Port Douglas, we checked into Sheraton Grand Mirage Resort Port Douglas, our home for the next two nights.

The resort immediately set the tone for a relaxing tropical escape. Surrounded by lush gardens, swaying palms and sparkling lagoon pools.

After settling in, we spent the afternoon exploring the resort before enjoying our first dinner at Lagoon House Restaurant, located within the hotel grounds.

With its relaxed waterfront setting and tropical ambience, it was the perfect introduction to our Port Douglas getaway.

Day 2: Exploring the Ancient Daintree Rainforest

Day two was undoubtedly the highlight of our trip as we ventured into the magnificent Daintree Rainforest.

Estimated to be around 180 million years old, the Daintree is the world’s oldest tropical rainforest—far older than the Amazon. Driving through the rainforest, surrounded by towering trees, lush greenery and winding roads, genuinely felt like stepping back in time.

Our first stop was the Daintree Discovery Centre, which provided the perfect introduction to this remarkable ecosystem.

The elevated boardwalks take you through different levels of the rainforest, from the forest floor to the canopy, while the observation tower offers spectacular views over the treetops.

Along the way, we learnt about the rainforest’s incredible biodiversity, ancient plant species and unique wildlife. It was an engaging experience and a fantastic way to appreciate the history and significance of the Daintree.

Another unforgettable stop was Alexandra Lookout.

The panoramic views stretch across the lush rainforest, the winding Daintree River and the Coral Sea.

What makes this viewpoint truly remarkable is that it overlooks the meeting point of two UNESCO World Heritage-listed sites—the ancient Wet Tropics of Queensland and the Great Barrier Reef.

Standing there and taking in this incredible landscape was easily one of the most memorable moments of our holiday. Photos simply don’t do it justice.

If you’re visiting the Daintree, Alexandra Lookout is a must-visit.

After exploring the rainforest, we made a stop at the Daintree Ice Cream Company.

Set amongst tropical rainforest surroundings, this was the perfect place to cool down and enjoy homemade ice cream made using tropical fruits grown on the property.

After a full day of exploring, we kept things relaxed and enjoyed dinner back at the resort at The Deck, which offers Italian-inspired cuisine in a beautiful tropical setting.

It was the perfect way to end a day filled with adventure.

Day 3: Mossman Gorge & Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas

Our next adventure took us to the beautiful Mossman Gorge, located within the Wet Tropics World Heritage Area.

Crystal-clear water flows over enormous granite boulders beneath a lush rainforest canopy, creating one of the most peaceful natural settings we experienced during our trip.

The walking tracks are easy to follow and suitable for visitors of all ages, making Mossman Gorge a fantastic destination for families.

In the afternoon, we visited Wildlife Habitat Port Douglas, where we enjoyed getting up close with some of Australia’s most iconic native animals.

From koalas and kangaroos to colourful birds and crocodiles, the wildlife park provides a wonderful opportunity to learn more about Australia’s unique wildlife in spacious, natural environments.

For our final night, we drove to Cairns and checked into Crystalbrook Flynn, overlooking the Cairns Esplanade.

Its modern design and prime waterfront location made it the perfect base for our last evening.

We ended our holiday with dinner at Paper Crane, one of our favourite restaurants in Cairns.

The food was exceptional. It was the perfect way to celebrate the final night of our Tropical North Queensland escape.

Day 4: Exploring Cairns

Before heading home, we enjoyed breakfast at Flynn’s Italian, which was included with our stay at Crystalbrook Flynn. The breakfast was excellent and a relaxing way to start our final morning.

We then visited The Tomb of the Pharaohs, an interactive Egyptian-themed attraction that was a fun and unexpected addition to our Cairns itinerary.

Before making our way to the airport, we spent some time strolling along the Cairns Esplanade, soaking up the tropical atmosphere one last time.

Travel Tips for Visiting Port Douglas & the Daintree

• Allow at least one full day to explore the Daintree Rainforest.
• Visit Alexandra Lookout early or later in the afternoon for beautiful lighting and fewer crowds.
• Wear comfortable walking shoes for rainforest boardwalks and walking tracks.
• Bring insect repellent, sunscreen and plenty of water.
• Book accommodation well in advance if travelling during Australian school holidays.

Final Thoughts

Our holiday to Port Douglas, the Daintree Rainforest and Cairns was the perfect blend of adventure, relaxation and quality time together.

Standing at Alexandra Lookout and seeing two UNESCO World Heritage Sites meet was a true highlight, while exploring the world’s oldest tropical rainforest reminded us just how extraordinary Australia’s natural landscapes are.

Combined with beautiful resort stays, unforgettable wildlife encounters and memorable dining experiences, this was a trip we’ll be talking about for years to come.
